Australia’s most affordable testosterone blood test
How do you know if your testosterone is low?
Low testosterone doesn’t always look the way you’d expect. These are some of the most common signs.
- Have you noticed your energy dropping off, even when you’re sleeping enough?
- Is your motivation or drive not what it used to be?
- Are you losing muscle or gaining weight despite training?
- Has your sex drive quietly faded?
- Do you wonder if what you’re feeling is just “getting older”, or something you can actually fix?
A simple blood test can give you a clear answer.
What this blood test measures
Three markers, one short blood test. Together they give you a complete picture of how your body is producing, transporting and using testosterone, far more useful than a single “Total T” number on its own.
- Total Testosterone ~8.3–29 nmol/L The full amount circulating in your blood, free plus protein-bound. Most labs report this first. The typical adult male reference range sits between roughly 8.3 and 29 nmol/L, though the exact range varies by lab, age and the time of day your blood is taken.
- Free Testosterone The small fraction (usually 1–2%) of testosterone that isn’t protein-bound and is biologically active. It’s what your tissues can actually use. A normal Total T paired with low Free T is a common pattern that a single-marker test misses entirely.
- SHBG (Sex Hormone Binding Globulin) The carrier protein that transports testosterone through your bloodstream. SHBG levels move with age, body weight, thyroid function and liver health, so the same Total T value can mean very different things at different SHBG levels.
Who should consider testing
Testosterone affects energy, mood, recovery, body composition, libido and focus, so the symptoms of low T are easy to mistake for general life stress, ageing or burnout. A blood test gives you a clear number to work from instead of guessing.
- Men 35 and over who’ve noticed slower recovery, lower energy or a quieter drive
- Anyone training seriously who wants a baseline before adjusting sleep, diet or supplementation
- Men experiencing unexplained fatigue, brain fog or mood changes
- People considering testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) who need a baseline reading
- Anyone who’s had a previous reading and wants to track changes over 6–12 months
- Women curious about their androgen profile, testosterone matters for both sexes
How it works
- Order onlineUnder two minutes, $59, no account needed. You’ll get an order confirmation with your pathology request straight away.
- Walk into a collection centre2,000+ accredited Australian collection centres in the Sonic Healthcare network. No booking required for a single-test blood draw.
- Quick blood drawA standard venous draw, typically 5–10 minutes in the chair, the same draw your GP would order.
- Results in your dashboardSame day in most cases, with plain-English explanations and reference ranges side-by-side. We’ll email you the moment they’re ready.
How to prepare
A few small things make your reading more accurate.
- Get tested in the morning. Testosterone peaks between 7 and 10am and drifts down through the day, so morning collection gives you the most useful number.
- Light fasting helps but isn’t strictly required. Water is fine, skip food in the hours before your draw if you can.
- Hydrate normally. Being well-hydrated makes the blood draw faster, easier and less likely to need a second attempt.
- Skip heavy training the day before. Intense exercise can transiently move your testosterone reading.
- On TRT or any hormone medication? Talk to your prescribing doctor about timing your test relative to your dose for a meaningful reading.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a doctor’s referral?
No. You order online directly through Vital Trend Health and walk into any partner collection centre. The pathology request is generated and sent electronically to the lab on your behalf, no GP visit, no waiting room.
How accurate are the results?
The blood draw and lab processing happen at the same Sonic Healthcare network of accredited Australian pathology labs your GP would use. The analytical accuracy is identical, what differs is the booking process and the way the results are presented back to you.
Can I share these results with my GP?
Absolutely. Your results come with a downloadable PDF you can share with any healthcare professional. Many of our customers use VTH alongside their GP, particularly for hormonal tracking that wouldn’t normally be covered by Medicare.
What exactly is measured in this test?
Three blood markers in one test: Total Testosterone (the headline number), Free Testosterone (the biologically active fraction your body can use) and SHBG (the carrier protein). Together they tell you not just how much testosterone you have, but how much of it your body can actually access.
How much does the testosterone blood test cost?
$59 flat, with GST included. There are no membership fees, no extra blood-draw charges and no separate report fees. Many private clinics charge around $75–$100 for the same three markers, so this is among the most affordable testosterone blood tests available in Australia.
How long until I get my results?
Most results land in your dashboard the same day your blood is processed by the lab, typically within 8–24 hours of the draw. You’ll get an email notification the moment they’re ready to view.
Who reviews my results?
Your samples are processed by NATA-accredited Australian pathology, and results are reviewed by Australian-registered clinicians before they’re released to your dashboard. Out-of-range results come with a flagged note and suggested next steps.
Do I need a fast before the test?
Fasting isn’t strictly required for testosterone, but most labs ask you to come in the morning before your first meal for the most consistent reading. Water is fine, stay hydrated, it makes the draw easier.
How often should I repeat the test?
Twice a year is a sensible cadence if you’re tracking changes from training, sleep or supplementation. Annual is fine if you’re at a steady baseline. Test sooner if you’ve made a major change you want to measure the effect of.
What happens to my health data?
Your results are stored encrypted on Australian servers, accessible only to you. We don’t sell health data, don’t share with insurers and don’t pass anything to third parties. You can delete your account and your data at any time.
Will Medicare or private insurance cover this?
No, this is a private, out-of-pocket blood test, not a Medicare-rebated one. That’s part of why it can be more affordable overall: you skip the GP consult fee entirely and you don’t need a referral. Some private health funds have wellness benefits that may reimburse part of the cost, check with your fund.
Are there age restrictions?
You need to be 18 or over to order online. There’s no upper age limit. Anyone under 18 should be tested through their GP.
