What this panel measures
- Red cells and haemoglobin: Haemoglobin, red cell count, haematocrit and the red cell indices (MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW). Together they describe your blood's oxygen-carrying capacity, and they are the values a doctor reviews when anaemia or a thick blood picture is in question.
- White cells: Total white cell count plus the five-part differential: neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils and basophils. Your immune system's headcount, and the values a doctor reviews when considering infection or inflammation.
- Platelets: Platelet count and mean platelet volume. Platelets are what stop you bleeding, and these are the values a doctor reviews for easy bruising, slow clotting or unexplained nosebleeds.

What's actually included in a Full Blood Count?
Around 21 values across three groups: red cells (haemoglobin, red cell count, haematocrit, MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW), white cells (total plus neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils) and platelets (count and mean platelet volume). The same FBC your GP orders.
I'm on testosterone therapy. Why does my doctor want this?
Testosterone stimulates red cell production, so haemoglobin and haematocrit can climb over time. Most prescribers check them at baseline and then periodically alongside testosterone levels.
Do I need to fast?
No. A full blood count is not affected by food.
Should I get this or the Iron & Energy Panel?
