HbA1c (Glycated Haemoglobin) Blood Test
HbA1c is your average blood sugar over the last 3 months — the single best test for diabetes risk and long-term metabolic health.
What HbA1c measures
HbA1c (glycated haemoglobin) measures the percentage of your red blood cells that have glucose stuck to them. Because red blood cells live about 3 months, the reading reflects your average blood sugar over that period — not just what you ate this morning. That makes it the most reliable single marker of long-term blood sugar control.
Who should consider checking HbA1c
Have you noticed any of these:
- family history of type 2 diabetes
- carrying weight around the middle
- PCOS or insulin resistance
- trouble losing weight despite trying
- frequent sugar crashes or cravings
- wanting a baseline before 40
How the test works
Single blood draw. No fasting required for HbA1c specifically — but other metabolic markers (fasting glucose, insulin) do require fasting. Most people fast for the whole panel for convenience. Results back same day.
What "normal" can look like
Australian labs typically classify HbA1c below 5.7% (39 mmol/mol) as normal, 5.7–6.4% (39–47 mmol/mol) as pre-diabetic range, and 6.5%+ (48+ mmol/mol) as diabetic range. These are screening categories — a single elevated reading isn't a diagnosis. Discuss any out-of-range result with your doctor.

Frequently asked questions
Why is HbA1c better than a single glucose reading?
A single fasting glucose tells you what your blood sugar is right now. HbA1c tells you what it's been on average for the last 3 months — a much more useful long-term signal.
Will diet on the day affect HbA1c?
No — HbA1c reflects 3 months. One meal won't move it.
Can HbA1c be falsely low or high?
Yes — certain anaemias and haemoglobin variants can skew the reading. If your blood count looks unusual, your doctor may consider alternative markers.
